Tell me more about the Catholic Church

Would you like to find out more about the Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Parish? These are some of the ways in which adults or children can be introduced to the church community.

The Open Door

The Open Door group is for those interested in finding out about the Catholic Church, or for those who have been away from the Church and are thinking about returning. A series of informal evenings are offered, giving individuals the chance to listen and to discuss any issues about the Catholic faith. If you would like to know more, contact parish priest Father Ted Mullen on 01788 813263 or email him on sacredatbilton@tiscali.co.uk

Living Faith

This is a series of talks which takes place each Autumn at Sacred Heart Church Hall. Each talk has a theme - perhaps on an aspect of the Bible, Church teaching or a social issue. The evening begins with a shared meal, and then a guest speaker leads a discussion. The next series begins in Autumn 2010 and will run for four weeks. For more details, contact Brian Davies on 01788 810886.

Breaking The Word

This group used to meet on alternate Mondays in term time for an hour to read and reflect on the Gospel reading for the coming Sunday. It is an opportunity to look at Christ's message and attempt to discern what it means for us in our everyday lives. The meeting is informal, inviting and thought provoking. It encourages us to be more familiar with the Word of God. Everyone is welcome to attend. This group is not meeting at present, but if a group of people would like to rejuvenate it, please contact the presbytery on 01788 813263.

Parish Catechetics

Over the years our provision of Parish Catechetics has done much to build up a sense of community here at the Sacred Heart. Through participation in the various programmes and groups, friendships have been made and a true sense of belonging encouraged. Hopefully this then enables us to reach out and share what we have with others. We need to ensure that this will continue and for that we need to build up our catechetical skills and encourage people to get involved as catechists.

Sacramental Programmes

Sacred Heart Church. Would you like to be involved?
Preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation are very much home and parish based. Many of our children do not attend Catholic Schools. Parents are encouraged to take an active part in the preparation and are involved in sessions aimed at their level building up confidence and a sense of community. The last session of each programme is always about going out to share the Good News. Preparation for Confirmation follows a pattern of weekly meetings for the candidates and includes a workshop day towards the end of the programme. There is an emphasis on prayer, community and mission, carefully linking these with everyday experiences. It is interesting that some parents are now choosing to defer the sacrament until their children are at secondary school.

Children's Liturgy and Satellites

Many parents have said how much they appreciate the opportunity for their children to be engaged in the Liturgy at a level appropriate to their understanding. The children really enjoy coming out to the hall. Since we began some years ago the number of young families at the 9.30 Mass has increased and continues to do so. The liturgies follow the same format as the Mass itself with emphasis on the Gospel. A teaching input using visual aids, music, prayer and practical work fill the half-hour or so before returning to the church for the Preparation of the gifts. Representatives of the children take part in the Offertory procession. Those who have made their First Communion go to Satellites which offers a deeper reflection on the scriptures and tries to pose a challenge for the week to come in their everyday lives. This continues to be popular and effective up to early teens.
